Patch 3.3 Compliant Warning: Possible Spoilers Below!
Lumine and her twin brother, Aether, came to Teyvat looking for a place to call home 500 years ago. When they descended, Lumine remained asleep while Aether began exploring. When she awoke, it was to Aether telling her they needed to leave. Their efforts to flee the apocalyptic ongoings were thwarted by an unknown goddess who separated them and stripped them both of their powers. When Lumine awoke again, she was five hundred years in the future.
With the help of Paimon, her trusty fairy guide, she has explored four of Teyvat's seven nations (Mondstadt, Liyue, Inazuma, and Sumeru) in search of her brother. Along the way, she has discovered that her brother has been actively working as the leader of the Abyss Order, and that there is some greater mystery in Teyvat that he wants her to solve in order to understand why he's chosen his path. Slowly, she has come to discover that the calamity that destroyed Khaenri'ah and reduced its people to monsters and undying humans is some kind of curse wrought by the gods, and that there is a recurring pattern of civilizations and gods being eliminated in order to preserve a greater secret: that there was a time before gods roamed Teyvat.
She has made numerous allies and enemies throughout her quest. In Mondstadt, she rescued the dragon Dvalin from a dreadful curse with the aid of the Knights and the Anemo archon. In Liyue, she helped the Geo archon to retire and fought off Osial, unleashed from the depths by the Fatui. In Inazuma, she helped to put an end to the Vision Hunt Decree that had sparked Watatsumi Island's rebellion and convinced the goddess of thunder to end her quest for unchanging eternity. She rescued the goddess Nahida from her lifetime of captivity and put a stop to the Balladeer's attempt to become a new god. And most recently, she experienced a memory of her brother's past and the mysterious presence of an entity with the power of a god who merely refers to himself as "the Sinner."
Imeeji
Lumine was a participant in "Imeeji," an idol reality TV show run by literal demons in literal hell. She, like many other individuals, woke up with absolutely no memory of who she was or how she got there. The profile assigned to her claimed that her name was "Artemis." She lived in a dorm room within a hotel in a fake set modeled off of Earth's Tokyo, known as Tokyo-F. In this dorm she lived with a group of other individuals she was assigned to work with.
The original idol unit she lived with was known as Wild City,. She briefly went by the name "Amos" during this period. As part of her time on Wild City, she picked the role "falcon." Later on she was a member of ☆ZRAEL
Although she had none of her powers or memories, she was able to purchase powers of transformation and gradually retrieve her memories by purchasing them back as well by turning in "points." These powers were based around the unit's theme (ex: Wild City was animals), and the clothing available to them matched the unit's aesthetic. Virtually anything that an idol wanted or needed beyond very plain, simple rations had to purchased by spending points.
These points could be accrued through a number of ways: Lives and Vids that might or might not include the use of Traits. These were also specific to the unit and again incorporated the unit's unique traits. The third and most dreaded way to earn points were Games. A game could be anything as innocuous as an opportunity to spend a day dueling Pokemon or you might be fighting off a hoard of real zombies and if you lost you died. Games were most often gruesome or emotionally disturbing and caused characters no end of trauma, but at least they could spend their points to get rid of their scars.
In her time in Imeeji, Lumine warrily befriended Childe, who claimed to be her friend from back home and also was on Wild City. She met up with her brother, Aether, as a part of a special event wherein outside/ extra idol teams were invited to participate in a short event. He remembered far more than she did and helped her to take encourage her to take memories. At this point she discovered that she and Aether were both experiencing the exact same life experiences: that they were from different time-lines. Lumine went through a short period of identity crisis and she was pulled from the Imeeji program for a long period of time in a process known as "transfers," wherein she was assigned to a different program.
When she returned to Imeeji, she was reassigned to the unit ☆ZRAEL through no choice or fault of her own. She did her best to take the change in stride even while Childe was handling it considerably less so. She befriended Saya, one of the few girls left on the team, which had considerably thinned out. Her brother transferred back in briefly, taking her old position on Wild City, but it was his memory that was gone this time. He was gone again almost as suddenly as he appeared, as though the demons were doing it just to torment her.
During the course of her stay in Imeeji, Lumine was fairly lucky. Initially she missed many of the more damaging games in her tenure, and then even when she was in them her team managed to pull through. That all changed once she was transferred onto ☆ZRAEL. Her unit suffered a variety of losses that resulted in a unit mate being poisoned and going berserk, her being bitten by a zombie after watching her unitmate be torn apart by one, being maimed in a literal war of battleships (piranha bites, leg breaking, near-drowning, jellyfish stings, etc), and other losses. She has also had her mind and relationships messed with, such that she kissed an enemy and fought with friends.
Not every game outcome was bad, though. She did successfully bond better with her unitmates as a result of them. She also better came to understand her personal values. Maybe most important of all, she started dating Venti as a direct result of some of the game-effect shenanigans left over from sensitIV's loss.
However, Lumine appeared toward the end of the production's run. Teams' numbers had drastically thinned out and continuously deteriorated in size. Troubles became even more obvious when the city started suffering from Grey Plague/Sofaform and whole parts of the city started flickering in and out of existence and crumbling. Even a game designed to provide a stopgap and join together the remnants of the teams couldn't rescue the production from its inevitable end.
An in spite of their captors' insistence that they needed to perform less they be forgotten and become one of the faceless, formless damned themselves, Lumine ended up in Ellipsa.
